In this approach, the primary goal is to understandmathematical structures, to prove mathematical statements, and evento invent or discover new mathematical theorems and theories.

He works mostly in the areas of combinatorics and graph theory. Other than this, I found the text to be not culturally insensitive or offensive. I wish the exercises had a difficulty ranking e. Richard Hammack is clearly an adept teacher; he masterfully structured this book with a range of student exposure to the material in-mind.
However, the choice and emphasis on most topics is highly satisfactory. More succinct boko Velleman’s How to Prove It. On the second role, the book lacks a sense of what the major might expect out of a mathematics degree and so when I use this book in a course I normally assign a cheap Dover secondary text for this purpose, along the lines of Ian Stewart’s “Concepts of Modern Mathematics,” the chapters of which naturally complement those of this text.

Please let me know if you use Book of Proof in your classes. Topics include sets, logic, counting, methods of conditional and non-conditional proof, disproof, induction, relations, functions, calculus hwmmack and infinite cardinality. The topics are presented in a clear fashion with themes in each section clearly stated and how one sections theme builds upon previously developed themes.

This book is an introduction to the standard methods of proving mathematical theorems. Comments I really enjoy this book and love that it is free for my students. There is a preface, an introduction, an index, and solutions to selected exercises.

It’s not a great book in the sense that The Great Gatsby is. The interface was fine. Kudos to the author.
Luiz Gustavo rated it really liked it Jan 14, New terms are always carefully defined, and a number of useful diagrams throughout the text prokf to the clarity of the explanations. Not only does it cover all of the main topics for such a course, but it also discusses mathematical writing, which is key when it comes to making mathematical concepts clear.
That said, I don’t find myself often deviating from the text’s content because it meets my needs. Written as a text for a one-semester “transition to higher mathematics” course, it introduces the undergraduate to logic and proofs and to the basic objects and language used in higher mathematics. It was a PDF version of a proof textbook. Numerous examples are intertwined with introduction of concepts and thoughtful exercises echo the themes of each section.
